Fundraiser aims to support earthquake survivors in Turkey, Syria

By CityNews Kitchener Staff

A fundraising event is planned for this weekend to support earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.

It's a collaborative effort between the Grand River Friendship Society and Intercultural Dialogue Institute, KW VegFest, and the Community Kitchen Co-operative of KW.

“A series of powerful earthquakes struck Turkey and Syria in the early morning hours of February 6, 2023, and there have been more than 2,100 aftershocks since then,” read an online post from the Grand River Friendship Society. “More than 50,000 people have died, and 1.5 million people are now homeless.”

Those looking to take part in the fundraiser can enjoy a meal, which will be provided by Queen Shawarma Turkish Cuisine. The event is set for March 19 at 5 p.m. at St. John's Anglican Church on Water Street in downtown Kitchener.

Registration is required and organizers say all donations will be sent to the Canadian Red Cross to support earthquake relief efforts.

The meal that will be provided will be plant-based and halal. You can learn more, including how to register, by clicking here
